Americans' fascination with the office of the Presidency has always been our national pastime.  Being the leader of the free world carries with it immense responsiblity and pressure, which makes the office of the Presidency the fixation of our admiration and interest.  The most stressful job in the world requires the ability to get away from it all and have some form of recreation.  Some Presidents played golf, some retreated to private enclaves, and as this article from Aqua points out, some used a little-known White House amenity that was first installed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the White House inground swimming pool.
