Swimming pool safety entails using alot of common sense, and yet accidents continue to happen at swimming pools across the country.  This post from the Association of Pool and Spa professionals presents this handy packet with guidelines for drowning prevention.  The main point that seems to always get lost is that there is no substitution for Adult Supervision, no matter what other precautions are in place.

Water, water everywhere: Swimming lessons are critical

According to this post from the Miami Herald, one could fill three classrooms with the amount of children under the age of 5 that drown in the state of Florida each year.  The CDC has been sponsoring a national movement to bring water safety to the forefront, but one of the major keys in preventing accidential drowinings is teaching kids how to swim.  This post talks about the importance of early swim lessons in this endeavor.

The Pledge

One minute is all you need to take the pledge to make sure your family is safer around water this year. Adult and child versions are available.

 

Water safety is at the forefront of every swimming pool owner's mind, and it should be on the mind of everyone associated with swimming pools.  In many cases, concerns about swimming pool safety can preclude someone from buying a pool.  The Pool Safely program run by the CPSC has been putting swimming pool safety at the forefront ever since the Virgina Graeme Baker act was put into law.  This post is a link to the Pool Safety Pledge for Adults and Kids, which gives people that will be around water a guideline and motivation to take the proper steps to keep kids and adults safe around water.

Off The Deep End: Pool Safety

Swimming pools can be the centerpiece of summer fun, recreation, and enjoyment.  Unfortunately, pools can also be an attractive nuisance.  This term commonly used in legal and insurance cirlcles refers to the fact that a pool invites trouble.  Children and animals are drawn to the vessel, and when unsupervised this can result in injury or death.  This post from Buzzell, Graham and Walsh Law Offices quotes the CDC in saying that ten (10) people die every day from drowning.  The post goes on to present the 8 common causes of drowning, and tips to prevent them from happening.

Tragic Tally: More Than 200 Reported Child Drownings In Pools and Spas This Summer

According to this post from The CPSC's Pool Safely campaign, at least 202 children between the ages of 1 and 14 drowned in a swimming pool or spa in the United States in 2013.  Of those, 143 of the victims were children younger than age 5.  These senseless deaths are virtually completely preventable, by utilizing vigilance and being informed about pool safety.  The CPSC campaign emphasizes fencing all pools, and staying close and attentive to children at all times while around water.  These are simple steps, but they will save lives.
