While there are swimming pool designs that exist without any decking, the overwhelming majority of swimming pool designs utilize some form of hardsscape for the deck.  Additionally, most municipalities require at least a minimum collar of a hard surface around the swimming pool for sanitary reasons.  Traditionally, the materials that are used for this decking can vary from wood or concrete.  The last two decades have seen the proliferation of natural stone and paver deck materials utilized for this purpose.  Check out some great examples of Stone and Paver decking in this post from Home Design Lover.
