How Much Does It Cost to Install a Pool?

From Angie’s List

Shopping for a swimming pool has some similarities to shopping for a car.  If you are a luxury car person, you will be looking for a luxury brand.  Similarly with swimming pools, the different types of pools will carry different price tags, and have different levels of expected performance.  This post from Angie’s list talks about 4 major swimming pool types and some reasonable expectations of costs.

Here is an excerpt from the post:

Want to install a pool? We explore costs for three types of in-ground pools, plus an above-ground pool.
Do you want a pool but don’t know much about the different types or costs? Learn more about the three in-ground options, plus above-ground pools, to decide what’s right for you.

Keep in mind that the cost of installing any pool has so many variables that even broad estimates vary. And take into account the ongoing cost of chemicals, hiring a pool cleaner and repairing or replacing parts when considering a pool’s overall cost.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy a Pool
Know the facts and what questions to ask before you sign the contract to build a pool.
Above-ground pool
What it is: Above-ground pools are typically cheaper than in-ground pools, but there are fewer choices for the pool’s depth, shape and size. If you want a 4-foot pool so your kids can beat the heat, it might be a good choice. Higher quality above-ground pools will be more expensive but last longer.

Cost: You could snag a “set and fill” pool for $100 and not need professional help, but it may last just a few summers. You can also get an above-ground pool with a wraparound deck for $10,000 or more. Costhelper.com lists prices for above-ground pools ranging from $1,500 to $5,000.

You may save more money and have fewer hassles if you install a swimming pool in the fall.
Poured concrete pool
What it is: Poured concrete pool. The texture of a poured concrete pool can become scratchy and rough, which will require resurfacing.

Installed cost: Generally comparable to a fiberglass pool in upfront price, with the average costing $20,000 to $30,000. Costhelper.com lists prices from $17,000 to $45,000.

Upkeep: Compared to a fiberglass pool, a concrete pool uses more chemicals, needs to be repainted, requires acid washing and more scrubbing and needs to be replastered every eight to 12 years.
