Natural Sunscreen: 10 Foods that Protect Your Skin From the Sun

From Swim University

The sunscreen industry is estimated to be around half a billion dollars and growing at a rate of nearly 3% a year.  Obviously, protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays is a topic that is near and dear to the American population.  This post from Matt Giovanisci from Swim University presents a novel idea with some good science behind it:  There are foods that when ingested can actually protect one’s skin from UV rays naturally and without excessive topical sun protection.

Here is an excerpt from the post:

Personally, I’m not much of a sun guy. I don’t like sitting in the sun just to get a tan. However, I’m a naturally good tanner and I don’t use sunblock or sunscreen unless I know that I’m going to be out in the sun for a really long time. Also, I don’t like using sunscreen lotion or spray because I don’t know what the heck is in it.

You need vitamin D, and you get that from the sun, but sunscreen blocks your skin from absorbing all those good vitamins. Why not go the holistic route and ingest some natural sunscreen? I’m not talking about taking out a tube of sunscreen and going to town, that would be extremely stupid and dangerous. I’m talking about eating some foods that will naturally protect your skin from the sun about a half our before you go out.

Note: I’m not saying you SHOULDN’T use sunscreen at all. If you easily burn, you should use sunscreen to protect yourself.

Here are few tips when looking for these foods:

Try to purchase organic products
Brightly colored foods
Foods that are high in antioxidants
Foods with Omega 3 Fatty Acid
Here are a list of foods that will provide your skin with a natural sunscreen to protect you during the day.

1. Apricots
